Abraham’s journey of faith and promise was far from easy. While God had promised to make him a great nation and bless him, the path to that fulfilment was filled with trials and uncertainties. Despite the challenges, God’s promises never wavered.
Part 1
Recap of God’s Promise
In Genesis 12:2-3, God declared His covenant with Abraham, promising to:
• Make him into a great nation.
• Bless him and make his name great.
• Bless all the earth through him.
But the road to fulfilling these promises required unwavering faith in God’s faithfulness.
Challenges Abraham Faced
Like us, Abraham encountered obstacles that tested his faith:
- Famine: Shortly after arriving in Canaan, Abraham faced a severe famine:
“There was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there.” – Genesis 12:10 (KJV) The scarcity of resources tested Abraham’s trust in God’s provision.
- Fear and Deception: Fearing for his life in Egypt, Abraham lied about Sarah being his wife (Genesis 12:11-13). His fear caused him to lose sight of God’s promises temporarily.
- Strife and Conflict: Abraham faced disputes between his workers and Lot’s workers:
“The land could not support them while they stayed together… and quarreling arose.” – Genesis 13:5-6 (NIV)
Despite these challenges, God’s faithfulness remained steadfast.
God’s Renewed Covenant
In Genesis 13:14-17, after Abraham separated from Lot, God renewed His covenant:
“Look around from where you are… All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.”
God’s promises were not derailed by Abraham’s challenges. Instead, God used those moments to deepen Abraham’s faith.
Encouragement for Today
Challenges and delays do not cancel God’s promises. Instead, they remind us to:
- Keep trusting – God’s promises are “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
- Wait patiently – His timing is perfect.
- Obey fully – Partial obedience delays blessings, but full obedience unlocks His best.
Declaration of Faith
Say this aloud as a proclamation of God’s promises:
“I am a great nation. I am blessed with the blessing of the Lord. My name is great, and I am a blessing. Those who bless me are blessed. Those who curse me are cursed. My family is blessed through me.” – Genesis 12:2-3 (NIV)
Closing Reflection
Just as God’s promises stood firm for Abraham, they stand firm for you today. Trust Him through every challenge, obey His call fully, and hold fast to His word.
