When God Feels Distant: Overcoming Doubt
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (NASB1995)
There are times when God feels quiet. You pray, but it seems like no one is listening. You worship, but His presence feels gone. You wonder, “Where are You, Lord?”
If you’ve felt this way, you’re not alone. Even David cried out, “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1). Yet even then, God is still close.
He promises: “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
So how do we get past doubt and come near when our feelings say otherwise?
1. Why Does God Feel Distant?
Before we can close the gap, we need to see what might be causing this feeling of distance.
- Sin can create a barrier.
“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.” — Isaiah 59:2
Unconfessed sin doesn’t take away His love, but it does stop our closeness with Him.
- Being too busy and having distractions drown out His voice.
When Martha was swamped with her tasks, Jesus gently reminded her that her sister Mary had chosen the better part sitting at His feet (Luke 10:40–42).
- Doubt clouds our awareness of His presence.
Like the father in Mark 9:24, we cry: “I do believe; help my unbelief!” Doubt makes it hard to see what God is already doing around us.
2. Overcoming the Feeling of Distance
What do you do when your emotions scream that God is far? You stand on what you know is true: His Word.
- Check your heart.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23
Ask Him to show any sin or burden that might be creating a wall. Confess it and get His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
- Spend intentional time in prayer and worship.
“The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18
Don’t wait to “feel” like it. Choose to worship and pray even through the quiet.
- Trust His nearness by faith.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” — 2 Corinthians 5:7
God’s presence is not decided by your emotions but by His promise.
3. The Power of Drawing Near
Something beautiful happens when you refuse to let quiet stop you. When you keep going despite the dryness, you grow.
- Press into God, even when you don’t feel like it.
Faith often gets strongest in the dark.
- Speak His promises aloud.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Declare the truth of His Word over your life.
- Keep seeking, even in silence.
“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13
God rewards those who seriously seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
Even Jesus, on the cross, cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). Yet the Father was working redemption in that very moment.
Don’t let quiet convince you God has left. He may be working behind the scenes in ways you can’t yet see.

- Pray even when you don’t feel anything, remember, faith is not about emotions.
- Confess and let go of anything standing between you and Him: sin, doubt or bitterness.
- Take one small step toward Him each day whether through prayer, worship, or His Word.

Even when you can’t see Him, He sees you. Even when you can’t feel Him, He is carrying you. Keep seeking you will find Him.
